ART CLUB

Since I got to DSU I have been looking for our Art Club, but no luck was found. When I went to the art building I discovered that we did have an art club but it was stopped because the members and corporation was very low. This year I want to restart the art club. You don't have to be an artist to be in be art club just have some type of interest in art. Programs that would be introduced is repainting the school, I have walked around this campus numerous times some areas seem very black and gray I think the school needs a little more color to it, make it more welcoming. I think having an art club is good because some people who like art might not have classes for art and want to keep their skills growing.

Textbook Assignments

Preface:
" if the quality of your life is not what you would wish it to be, it is most likely because it is tied to the way you think about you life." Pg XV

This quote in my opinion explains that if you don't appreciate your life your going to approach your life in a unlikely manor. you might not be the most happiest person and be down. This is a major part of critical thinking because you have to critically think about the choices you make in life.  You have the opportunity to make your life the way you want it if you just map out how you want to live it.

" One of the problems with children's decisions is that they are often the result of the "party line" of the peer groups to which they belong. " Pg. 204 Chapter 10

It's is very common to see in college the ending result of peer pressure. Some kids think they are able to function themselves and get into the habit of what other students are doing.  Once the chain of their parents gets unhooked and they walk to college not knowing what bumps they will walk into, most likely they will end up doing the wrong thing. I have seen kids do drugs that wouldn't even touch it but since their groupies are doing it, why shouldn't  they?  I have been part of peer pressure, because you can always say no to something but you can't say never. I promised myself a lot of things when I was younger but I broken a lot of those promises as well. Always be sure you pick the right people to hang around or you might end up in jail, the hospital or even a grave.

Study Groups

Purpose of Study Groups:

Many students fail to realize the potential of study in relationship to learning and mastery of course  materials. Students enrolled in doctoral studies, law, and medical programs have taken advantage of study groups as a learning technique for many years. Study groups typically involve three to four students who meet weekly, sometimes more often, to share information, knowledge, and expertise about  a course in which they are all enrolled.  The study group environment offers students an opportunity to  engage in intense discussion about course material. Effective study groups assist students in learning the  material in a deeper, more meaningful way. Groups that are effective generate energy, active  participation, discipline, and commitment from group members.  These dynamics are all important  criteria for learning.

Study Habits

You can prepare yourself to succeed in your studies.
Try to develop and appreciate the following habits:
  • Take responsibility for yourself
Recognize that in order to succeed you need to make decisions about your priorities,
    your time, and your resources
  • Center yourself around your values and principles
Don't let friends and acquaintances dictate what you consider important
  • Put first things first
Follow up on the priorities you have set for yourself, and don't let others, or other interests, distract you from your goals
  • Discover your key productivity periods and places
    Morning, afternoon, or evening?
Find spaces where you can be the most focused and productive.
Prioritize these for your most difficult study challenges
  • Consider yourself in a win-win situation
When you contribute your best to a class, you, your fellow students,
and even your teacher will benefit.
Your grade can then be one additional check on your performance
  • First understand others, then attempt to be understood
When you have an issue with an instructor (a questionable grade, an assignment deadline, etc.) put yourself in the instructor's place.
Now ask yourself how you can best make your argument given his/her situation
  • Look for better solutions to problems
For example, if you don't understand the course material, don't just re-read it.
Try something else! Consult with the professor, a tutor, an academic advisor, a classmate, a study group, or your school's study skills center
  • Look to continually challenge yourself

Academics

MATH:
Never have I once dealt with a foreign teacher until this semester. My intro to algebra class is taught my a Chinese lady. At first it was very hard to understand her because of her accent but now its more easier the longer I am in the class. Her teaching methods are very fast paced but she will try to help a student if they can not understand the problem or lesson. Not saying that she is a bad teacher, I was just not ready to be taught by someone other than American which can make it harder to pass a class. Surprisingly the first test from the class i got a 84% on it which made me very proud because i usually do horrible in math. All I gotta do know is take nots, do homework, and pass quizzes. sounds easy enough.

Participation Around School

Greek Programs:
The Greeks on DSU campus support and give extra advice to the students. I have been to some of these programs and I can say that each program is unique because they give different advice and perspectives. I have learned some new information while attending these meetings. For instance I did not know that if you are wearing a suit, you should not be wearing a backpack try to get a suitcase. I think attending these programs is very good and will help you in the long run.

Org. Fair:
During welcome week at DSU, Freshman had the chance to look at clubs and organizations that they could join. From TV down to dancing DSU has it all. There were so many clubs out to see i didn't have  time to look at them all. There was something for everybody and if not a student can always create a club. The known fashion groups 1E and Limitless were there trying to recruit, A new group, istep, was also out trying to gain members now they are stepping with the greeks during homecoming week.

Thank You: Angel Andino (Father)

I like to thank my Father for showing me that I could be a better man then him. For a man to leave a child fatherless would be the most unmanly thing i could think of. He is one of the reasons I wanted to go to college so I could get a real job and not be stuck behind bars for most of my life. It was a learning experience not to have a father around, I had to teach myself and learn what is good and band in my surroundings. Even though i gave the man a second chance it was already 16 years late and $5,000 short of child support. I am one of 5 kids that he had and i think my life was better without him.
Thanks "Dad"

Class Speakers: Equestrian Team

A sport that I was never familiar with caught some interest when the Equestrian Team came up and talked to the class. The only time I have seen a Horseback riding team is TV and to know that my college is a very lucky school to have this kind of event. The lovely ladies talked about their horses and  how is it like at having them at school. Some of the girls have been riding for a long time. One of the riders said her father wanted her to do a different sport besides basketball and lacrosse so he signed her up for Horseback riding. Even though it looks all fine and princess like they said that it is extremely hard work and you have to be dedicated to be a good rider. I wish the Equestrian event field was closer to campus because they could get a lot of support from their fellow students and have a team to cheer them on.

Speakers: Lisa Moody, Carlos Holmes, Zaz Exume

Our class was fortunate enough to have speaker to come share some variable information about our lovely university. From jobs and how to get a job, to the history of Delaware State University, and a personal student experience at DSU.

LISA MOODY:
Mrs. Lisa Moody is the Director of Career Services at Delaware State University. She provided information about what opportunities the camp has to offer. From how to get a job and where to get a job. Universities and students need to be thankful for people like her. She will try her best to get you a job in your major. It was very important to take notes that day about the info she was giving, it was more than helpful it could possibly be the start of your career.
Lisa Moody on WDSU TV last year Talking about Career fair and her job

CARLOS HOLMES:
Mr. Carlos Holmes is the Director of News Service at Delaware State University. During his visit to our class he gave us the insight of the past of DSU.  From the very beginning of DSU to the Present, he talked about Presidents, The Struggles, The ups and downs, School vs The State, and all together to create our HBCU, Delaware State University.

ZAC EXUME:
Mr. Zac Exume is a student at Delaware State University. A upcoming successful mass communications major in my opinion. From the stories he has told us about the opportunities he has got from DSU. He went to a different state and did some astonishing work which lead him to have a head job at a one of the companies he was interning for. Zac is also the station manager at WDSU TV. He gave an inspiring word of wisdom to us and I'm sure he empowered our class to be on the same road he took. I believe that if all the students in Mass Comm does the same thing is Zac we will be a highly successful class.

Library Research Literacy Jeopardy

What other way to make the library more interesting than making it into a game. Instead of having a quiz about the library we were given the opportunity to play a library Jeopardy based game. If you were paying attention in class the answers would have been simple and clear for you to answer. The computer did not stand a chance against me. It was a fun way of learning and I learned new things each question.

Freshman Forum: How to Dress Professional

The speaker talked about a very important topic that the class of 2017 needed to hear. Some young adults may have never dressed professional until they got to college. In college it is a main key that needs to be learned because it prepares you on how to dress when you are getting into the real world. As a growing adult its is mandatory that you should know how to dress professional. Freshman were already given specific rules on how to dress at forum. We were told to wear suits, ties, light color dress shirts, dress shoes, knee length skirts, blouses, stockings. From my visual i have seen kids wear clothes that make it seem like they are going to a night club.

Being dressed up professional gives people a different point of you like you mean something to the world. After one of the Forums, I went to the admissions building to do a check up with my mentors. When I was walking to the building i was offered a job. Im pretty sure that if i was wearing sweatpants and a t-shirt I wouldn't have got the job. Never underestimate the power of dressing professional.
